Sheep at Marsden
The problem will be discussed at the enhancement society’s next meeting at Marsden Conservative Club on Thursday.
They’ve been roaming in the village for decades. Sheep just can’t resist Marsden. Here are some of the recent attempts to fence them in and repair cattle grids and stop the sheep’s grate escapes:
February, 2007 – Sheep wander on to the railway lines at Standedge, causing delays of up to an hour.
September, 2006 – Sheep get into school grounds in Marsden, covering the playground with droppings.
March, 2006 – A woman crashed her car into a sheep on Manchester Road near the Great Western Garage, causing it to burst into flames. Marsden firefighters tackled the blaze.
February, 2006 – Dorothy Lindley asks the National Farmers’ Union to investigate the continuing problem with marauding sheep. She says a broken cattle grid at Old Mount Road is making the problem worse.
September, 2005 – A broken sheep grid is removed and replaced with tarmac.
July, 2004 – Examiner reporter Jenny Parkin snaps sheep taking advantage of shallow cattle grids, crossing them by stepping between the bars.
July 2004 – An Examiner story about commando sheep rolling across cattle grids grips the world. GMTV featured a live broadcast from Marsden and the story is followed up in national and international newspapers.
