Winners of Examiner’s New York trip contest

GOLFER Ray Owen will celebrate his 50th with a trip to New York.

The Linthwaite man is off to the Big Apple after wife Susan won an Examiner competition this month.

The couple will spend five days in New York in May, a month after Ray – who is captain of Crosland Heath Golf Club – turns 50.

Susan, 54, said: “I’m really excited because I wanted to do something different for Ray’s 50th. I think we’ll go in May because it’s just after his birthday and I think the weather will be nice then.

“We’ve never been to the US before. I’m looking forward to seeing a show on Broadway and doing some shopping of course.”

Susan entered the competition last week by correctly identifying New York’s nickname as the Big Apple. She said: “I’ve never won a holiday before, but you’ve got to be in it to win it.”

Susan is hoping her trip to New York will be better than last year’s holiday.

She said: “I fell and damaged my thumb a few days before we went to Northumbria. I had a pot on my arm when we were there. Ray had to do everything for me, even cut my bacon.”

Louise Campbell, of Marsh, was the runner-up and won a luxury weekend break for two.

In third place was Carol Martin, of Liversedge, who won a free break for two.
