Hipperholme tumble drier factory cuts workers' hours

A COMPANY making tumble driers is cutting its hours in the face of plummeting demand.

Hipperholme-based Crosslee said it would reduce manufacturing capacity by one day a week following plunging sales.

A statement from the firm, which has about 500 employees from across Kirklees and Calderdale, blamed the move on a sharp decline in consumer spending following the slowdown in the housing market, worries about jobs and the withdrawal of credit facilities by the banks.

It said: “We have seen a significant number of large and small high street retailers go into administration and subsequent closure as a result of this recession.

“We as a company have recently been directly affected by this situation, having seen four large customers go into administration or receivership in the last eight weeks!

“Therefore, it is vitally important that we as a manufacturer react as swiftly as possible to these changes in the market place.

“We have seen a rapid reduction in the demand for our products and as a result of this we need to ensure that we bring production levels in line with demand.”
