MURDER accused Zahbeena Navsarka told police she would never hurt her daughter.

The young mother claimed that it was a coincidence that her two-year-old daughter Sanam drowned just a week after hearing of another child drowning.

She and partner Subhan Anwar, 21, are both standing trial at Bradford Crown Court accused of the murder of little Sanam, which they both deny.

They are accused of causing more than 100 injuries which led to the death of Sanam on May 8, 2008, at their home on Riddings Road, Deighton.

During her final police interview on May 11 last year, the 21-year-old mother said: “I think it’s him (Anwar) who has done it.

“It’s not me, she’s my daughter and I’d never hurt her.”

When police suggested she was covering up the truth of Sanam’s death, Navsarka replied: “Why would I do that to my daughter?

“He brought her down to me like that and then he called the ambulance.

“I’m not responsible ... I haven’t caused those injuries.”

During the final interview police detailed the injuries little Sanam suffered, saying they would have been caused at least eight days before she died.

Navsarka's response was: “...erm.”

The interviewing police officer continued: “I’m suggesting she has been killed by some other means. How can a caring mother not take her daughter to hospital when she is in so much pain?”

Navsarka replied: “No, she was in the bath.

“I cared about her, she was my daughter.”

Navsarka denies murder but admits a charge of failing to protect Sanam. Anwar denies both the murder charge and a charge of causing or allowing the death of a child.
