A COUNCILLOR is sickened a new rail service between West Yorkshire and London will not stop in Kirklees.

From the summer, Grand Northern trains will run three trains a day to King’s Cross from Bradford, Halifax and Brighouse via Wakefield Kirkgate. The Office of Rail Regulation gave the go-ahead for the new service on January 29.

But Clr Martyn Bolt is disappointed there will be no stops in Kirklees.

The Mirfield Conservative said: “While I welcome a new service between West Yorkshire and London, I’m sickened there will be no stops in Kirklees. Having a stop in Mirfield or Dewsbury would ease the congestion of passengers at Leeds station.”

Clr Bolt added that Brighouse train station may struggle to cope with extra passengers.

He said: “There needs to be significant investment in parking at Brighouse station because some people from Kirklees go there to catch a train to London rather than travel to Leeds or Wakefield.”
