Day-long power cut leaves Holmfirth in dark

“It was pretty chaotic. Even our mobile phones weren’t working so we couldn’t ring to cancel people’s bookings.

And at Andrew’s Greengrocers, on Huddersfield Road, customers scrambled in the dark for their fruit and veg.

Owner Andrew Bray said: “People couldn’t see what they were buying and our takings were down.”

“But the village rallied around us and lent us some lamps.”

A spokesman for CE Electric UK said: “We are conducting a survey of the high voltage overhead lines in the area which will enables us to assess the performance of the electricity network locally and identify the improvements we can make in the short term.

“At the same time, we are drawing up a development plan to enhance the network generally and reduce the frequency of power cuts.

“We are sorry for the severe disruption that power cuts are causing here and assure residents and businesses that we are working hard to carry out any work necessary to improve the security of the local electricity supply. We will keep our customers informed of our progress.”
