Young people in Huddersfield call for government money for jobs and training

YOUNG people in Huddersfield are putting pressure on the Government to plough money into jobs and training.

Youth Fight for Jobs is a national campaign backed by the Socialist Party and trade unions to secure more job opportunities, stop cheap labour and abolish university fees.

Huddersfield supporters of the campaign were out in the town centre in force on Saturday urging people to sign their petition.

As part of their demonstration, a supporter dressed as Gordon Brown handed over a ‘blank cheque’ to a banker.

Huddersfield organiser Gary Bunton, 20, said: “We have organised this campaign because a whole generation is facing desperation and ruin and it is about time we stood up and made our voices heard.

“We are fighting for free education, a living wage and decent jobs for all, with no exceptions.”

In 2008, 15% of 16 to 24-year-olds were unemployed.

The group says unemployment figures nationally are set to rise to 3m and 40% of those will be young people.
