A HUDDERSFIELD soldier based in Afghanistan has reassured her family: “Don’t worry – I’m safe and sound here.”
The threat of rockets and airstrikes have become part of a day’s work for Lance Corporal Georgina Lord.
The former Brockholes girl – also the first British female soldier to cross the Iraqi border in 2003 – has been serving in the war-torn country for the past five months.
Now with only three weeks left, the 28-year-old is looking forward to being reunited with her family.
She said: “It has been hard work. I have missed my family. My mum was so worried and kept saying there must be something I could do to get out of it. She had some sleepless nights, but it is what I do for a living.”
Georgina is serving with 29 Commando – part of the Royal Artillery.
The former Honley High School pupil is stationed at headquarters in the town of Lashkar Gah – a prime Taliban target.
Luckily, her admin job updating logs and databases seven days a week has kept her away from frontline action. But the constant threat of attack is always there.
She said: “We are quite a prime target and there were a lot of rockets and airstrikes at first. But, because I have been out in Iraq on the frontline, I wasn’t phased by it.
