HUBERT RHODES MBE was a man who dedicated much of his life to helping others.
He was born in a cottage on Moor End Road, Lockwood in June, 1921, and later moved to live in Midway, South Crosland.
After leaving school he went to work at Brook Motors as a draughtsman before signing up for the RAF as an armourer for the Canadian and Norwegian Air Force in both France and Germany.
When he came back from the war in 1946 he went back to working for Brook Motors in their import and export department. This is where he met his future wife of 61 years, Dillys Kinder, who worked in the estimating department. They married on June 21, 1947.
While working for Brook Motors, Hubert was a cricket umpire for their second team.
In 1967, Hubert, Dillys and their two sons, Howard and Andrew, moved to Jos Lane, Shepley. Soon after moving to Shepley, Hubert volunteered at the local scout troop, found himself on a village rota to collect and pick up the elderly from village events and he represented Shepley on the Urban District Council.
Hubert joined Shepley British Legion in 1968 and was branch secretary and welfare officer for many years.
