Kirkwood Hospice has more shops in Kirklees than Greggs, McDonalds or Subway

A CHARITY now has more shops in Kirklees than McDonalds and Subway combined.

Kirkwood Hospice has opened a new charity store in Kirkburton – its 14th in the Huddersfield area.

The charity, which has run a hospice in Dalton since 1988, has shops across the borough from Holmfirth to Batley.

By comparison, bakery chain Greggs has nine shops in Kirklees, Subway has seven, while McDonalds and Oxfam have five each.

Visitors to the new shop, on North Road, were greeted with chocolates and Bucks fizz.

The store, opened by Kirkwood trustees chairman Granville Sutton, will sell second-hand clothing, bric-a-brac, books and toys as well as the charity’s latest ‘bag for life’.

Kirkwood retail co-ordinator Angela Dyson said: “Everyone at the hospice is looking forward to having a presence in Kirkburton.

“I hope the shop will become a real feature of the Kirkburton community with local people volunteering at the shop, donating goods for sale and of course, shopping with us.”

The hospice opened its first shop in King Street, Huddersfield, in 1988, but that vanished in the plans to create Kingsgate and the shop was relocated to Byram Street.
