Post Office returns to Shelley as community rally round

POST Office services have returned to a rural village after the first mobile service in West Yorkshire was launched.

Shelley Post Office was not one of the dozens axed by Royal Mail bosses, but the village was left in limbo when sub-postmaster Howard Crowther retired last October.

Mr Crowther used the Far Bank premises as his home and so the site was not available to any newcomer.

But now after more than six months’ hard work by the Shelley Community Association, Village Hall Committee and Kirkburton Parish Council a new outreach service has been launched at Shelley Village Hall.

Local resident Carol Halstead was first through the door to take advantage of the new service.

And councillors and villagers gathered to watch Shelley’s oldest resident Fred Huddle, 97, cut the ribbon to officially launch the new mobile service.

A full range of Post Office services will be offered three days a week, including car tax, bureau de change and bank withdrawals, by Kirkburton sub-postmistress Marion Davison.

Mrs Davison, who has run the nearby branch for six years, said the opening morning for the new outreach service had already proved popular.

She said: "It’s been really successful.

"We’ve had quite a lot of customers this morning.

"A lot of pensioners have had to get relatives to get their money for them or go to the main office in Huddersfield.
