Post Office returns to Shelley as community rally round

"I’ve had to get extra staff in at Kirkburton to cover for me. It’s not easy, it’s going to be a bit of a juggle.

"But as long we get the customers coming in we will carry on offering the services to them."

She added: "Outreach services are common in small communities in Scotland and North Yorkshire, but this is the first to open in West Yorkshire."

The case for a Post Office in Shelley Village Hall was given a boost when Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik, whose constituency will include Kirkburton and Denby Dale at the next general election, stepped in and fought to help locals keep the service.

Mr Malik sent out a survey to Shelley households, spoke to locals and submitted a report to Post Office Ltd (POL) arguing in support of the service.

He says he has now become the only MP in the country to successfully fight two post office closures after he helped save the Thornhill Edge branch last year.

Post Office services are available at Shelley Village Hall on Mondays and Tuesdays between 9.30am and 12.30pm and Thursdays between 1.30pm and 4.30pm.
