Change4Life: Super League star Eorl Crabtree backs healthy living initiative
May 13 2009 By Andrew Hirst
GIANTS prop forward Eorl Crabtree certainly belongs to the right team. He’s a statuesque 6ft 6 inches tall and weighs in at 120kg (nearly 19 stones) of fighting-fit muscle.
At the age of 26 he’s in the peak of physical fitness – and works hard to stay that way.
Playing in the Super League is, he says, extremely demanding, and means that he has to take his health and diet seriously.
Because of his size and the fact that he’s engaged in some form of strenuous physical activity almost every day, Eorl says he has to eat “a lot.”
Even though he needs to consume thousands of calories a day and could easily burn off junk food, the rugby star says that a healthy diet is as important as training if he is to perform well on the pitch.
“If I ate a lot of rubbish it wouldn’t give me the nutrition I need for my rugby.”
While professional athletes have the best possible reason and incentive to eat well, he feels that theirs is an example we would all do well to follow.
Certainly, Eorl’s family – wife Helen, daughter Lilly (7) and stepsons Connor (13) and Joseph (11) – share his interest in healthy living.
“I think it’s really important for the children, for their bodies and their concentration levels. They eat healthily at home and have school dinners, which are a healthier option thanks to Jamie Oliver and his campaign,” said Eorl.
