TUES PM: M62 crash - heavy delays all night likely

5.30pm update

A CALDERDALE man is seriously ill in hospital after his lorry jack-knifed on the M62 this morning.

The 50-year-old was driving a Ford Iveco HGV along the eastbound carriageway of the M62 when it travelled through the central reservation onto the westbound carriageway and into oncoming vehicles.

The Calderdale man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries.

A 56-year-old Leeds man was the driver of a Ford Ducato travelling westbound. He and his passenger both died at the scene.

Six cars were involved in the pile-up at 6.30am this morning.

The motorway will be closed off until around 8pm tonight but it could be tomorrow morning before all three lanes reopen.

3pm update

MOTORISTS are being advised to avoid the M62 after a crash killed two people early this morning.

A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency said this afternoon  that police were still working at the site of the collision and that they have not yet been allowed to assess the scene.

It means motorists on their way home from work will be affected by the closure between junction 27 and junction 28.
