Kirkheaton pub stages quiz night with no alcohol

Mr Coleman said: “It was an oversight and no-one had realised, so we had to close down until we got a temporary licence.

“But just because we couldn’t make any money, it didn’t mean that we were going to let this event get cancelled.

“We had made this commitment and we wanted it to go ahead. The council were happy for us to open as long as we only sold soft drinks.”

Mr Steel said: “They did it purely for our benefit.

“It was just a complete coincidence that people from the company had told them this the day before the quiz.

“It’s a really nice community pub and that was why Kirklees was happy to let it open.

“It was an absolutely brilliant night.

“We were all on the soft drinks, but it really didn’t make a difference.”

Seventeen teams took part in the quiz and raised more than £300.

The pub is now on a rolling temporary licence which allows them to open for four days a week while they wait for a permanent licence.

Mr Steel added: “We are really grateful to both Colin and Kirklees as they made every effort to make sure the event could go ahead.”

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “We are pleased to hear the function was a success and that the local community is working hard to raise funds.

“We will do what we can to assist with any future events.”
