Kirkheaton Rovers organise charity bike ride
FOOTBALL players are swapping the pitch for pedal-power to take part in a charity bike ride.
Around 25 members from Kirkheaton Rovers football club will be getting on their bikes for a 100-mile sponsored ride to Flamborough on June 20.
The team will be raising money for the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust – for a children’s hospice and respite centre in Huddersfield.
The riders will leave the Spangled Bull public house, Kirkheaton, at 6am for a eight-hour ride to the coast.
They will travel on A and B roads to reach their destination.
A nurse, physiotherapist, ex-paramedic and traffic police officer will be among the back-up team helping out along the way.
The cyclists will get free food and accommodation overnight and free train travel home the next day courtesy of Northern Rail.
Former Huddersfield Town player Chris Billy will be among them. He said: “I thought it was a brilliant way of raising money for such a worthy cause.”
