Preparations begin for June’s Deighton Carnival

PEOPLE in Deighton are gearing up for their annual community carnival later this month.

Deighton Carnival will take place on June 27 at the Deighton Centre.

To promote the event, the organising committee held a carnival roadshow at the Chestnut Centre.

Activities included face painting, a bouncy castle and displays from a graffiti artist.

The carnival queen for 2009 was also chosen.

She is Stephanie Lawrence, from Deighton.

Stephanie, who is pictured at the roadshow, will lead this year’s procession from the Deighton Centre at 1pm on a circular tour around the area, arriving back at the centre at 2pm.

The theme for the 2009 carnival is Deighton: Community of Culture.

The event aims to celebrate the diversity of people in Deighton and the different talents they possess.

Co-ordinator Howard Belafonte says this year’s event will eclipse previous years, both in size and quality, with a lot more activities and entertainment.

He said: “The family event brings the whole of the Deighton ward and surrounding areas together to celebrate the diversity of the area.”

As well as the procession, there will be a five-a-side football contest, which last year attracted teams from overseas.

There will be a stage show of local talent, a funfair, stalls, games, a bouncy castle, face painting, nail art, hair braiding and health checks.
