Court helps first Kirklees forced marriage victim

Victims are asked to give a statement about their circumstances. The case is then heard at a county court where a judge has the power to make an order which is then served on those responsible.

Fartown woman Kiran Bali – director of the Yorkshire and Humber Faiths Forum – welcomed the news.

She said: "Forced marriages are directly correlated to criminal offences such as harassment and threatening behaviour. This abuse cannot be justified on any religious or cultural basis.

"It is an unacceptable practice and must not be endured. We must inform and alert our communities that this practice is against the culture of a civilised society.

"These welcome developments are crucial to confronting what I feel is primarily an issue of violence against women.

"A powerful message has been conveyed to all victims of this crime against humanity, along with those responsible for it.

"Victims can be more hopeful that the justice system will support them and punish the perpetrators."
