Elland man jailed for Billy Khan murder

Ul-Haq, of Elizabeth Street, Elland, was cleared by the jury of attempting to murder Yusuf Khan and an alternative charge of wounding him with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

The Honorary Recorder of Bradford, Judge Stephen Gullick, told Ul-Haq that a life sentence was laid down by law, but he set the minimum jail term at 14 years before he could even be considered for release by the Parole Board.

Billy Khan died from a single stab wound to the stomach and Judge Gullick told Ul Haq that the public were rightly concerned about the use of knives on the streets.

The judge said it was clear that foul and obscene language was being used that afternoon and Ul Haq felt that his 51-year-old brother was not being shown the respect that older members of the community deserved.

But he said Ul Haq had seen the events unfolding and had gone home and armed himself with a knife.

"You went back to the scene and, I have no doubt, witnessed your brother seeking to assault Billy and Yusuf ... and you decided that the appropriate course was to kill him (Billy)," the judge told Ul Haq.

Kayshan Farooq, 29, is expected to be sentenced within the next ten days for the offence of attempting to murder Yusuf Khan.
