Tesco submits Holmfirth supermarket plan

A SUPERMARKET giant has submitted plans for a new store.

Tesco is applying for planning permission from Kirklees Council to build new premises in Holmfirth.

Tesco unveiled plans for the former Midlothian Garage site off New Mill Road last year.

Company spokeswoman Jennifer Duncan said today: “There is a clear need for a supermarket in Holmfirth, with a eight in 10 people shopping outside the town. By providing them with the opportunity to stay and shop in Holmfirth we believe there is the potential for a real social and economic boost for the town.”

Tesco has held a series of meetings with councillors, highways officers, business people and residents about the proposal in the last six months.

The company initially planned to cover the store’s roof with moss. But the supermarket has changed its plan after the consultation.

Ms Duncan said: “The major change from the initial plans is the removal of the living-roof to allow for features like wind-catchers and roof-lights, which will reduce the store’s environmental impact.”

The company hopes the new store would create 350 full and part-time jobs.

However, some traders in Holmfirth oppose the plan, saying it will harm the town’s small shops.
