Fountain work under way in Square revamp
WORKERS have completed more of the St George’s Square revamp.
But the controversial project, which has been dogged by problems from the start, is still well behind schedule.
The main work involved in the £4m regeneration is almost complete, with 300sq metres of stone flags in front of the train station having been cleaned and sealed in the last week.
A further 200sq metres of new paving has been grouted.
Workers are now building a water feature at the bottom of the plaza and installing fountain heads for a display close to the railway station entrance.
An underground control room for the fountain has already been completed.
Kirklees Council took over the work in March after contractors Wrekin went into administration.
The work has been going on for more than a year with numerous complaints from people with businesses around the Square about the impact the work has had on their livelihood.
There were also complaints that the council chose to use Chinese granite rather than local stone in some of the work.
