Blaze rips through Fartown club - fire pictures

A HUGE fire gutted a building in Huddersfield last night.

The old Huddersfield Supporters’ Club building behind the historic Fartown Pavilion was destroyed in the blaze which started around 7.30pm.

Passing motorist Vine O’Neill, 44, spot- ted the fire from nearby Spaines Road.

The Waterloo man said: "I saw a lot of flames and a lot of people on the grounds trying to get a better view."

Nabeel Zaidi, 23, was playing cricket with friends on the pitch below the pavilion when he noticed the flames coming from the one-storey red brick building.

Nabeel, who lives on Halifax Old Road in Birkby, said: "We saw smoke coming out and there was fire everywhere. There were huge flames."

Stuart Black from Clifton near Brighouse spotted the flames as he drove down Spaines Road. He said: "I decided to investigate and I saw some fire engines going in to the old Fartown Rugby ground. I managed to get round to the back of the building. The fire was quite dramatic."

Fire crews from Huddersfield, Brighouse, Elland and Mirfield used five hose reels to battle the flames.
