Labour Colne Valley hopeful plans to move to constituency

Ms Abrahams was born in Sheffield and has lived in the North West all her adult life. She is married and has two daughters aged 20 and 21.

Ms Abrahams is director of the International Health Impact Assessment Consortium at the University of Liverpool and chaired Rochdale Primary Care Trust from 2002 to 2006.

She said: “My background has been in public service and I see politics as public service. To become Colne Valley’s MP is the pinnacle of public service to me.”

Ms Abrahams added that Labour had a “good chance” of holding the seat at the next general election, which must be held by June 2010 at the latest. Ms Mountford had a majority of 1,501 over the Conservatives at the last poll in 2005.

The Tory candidate is Jason McCartney, of Holmbridge, while Marsden councillor Nicola Turner will contest the seat for the Lib Dems.

The Colne Valley constituency includes the Kirklees Council wards of Lindley, Golcar, Crosland Moor and Netherton, Colne Valley, Holme Valley North and Holme Valley South.
