Fartown supporters’ club to be demolished
She said the remaining site had been recently upgraded to provide recreational play and fitness facilities for young people of all ages.
The pitches were also still being used by St Joseph’s Rugby Club for the amateur rugby league.
The nearby former cricket pavilion was bought in May 2008 by the Ahamadiyya Muslim Association, which has permission to create a new mosque and community centre on the site.
President Munir Ahmed was among those called to the blaze.
He said: “The supporters’ club has been set alight by vandals a couple of times before, but this time it was completely torched.
“It appears to have been totally gutted.
“Our worry now is that it will be a hazard for the kids who go there to play.”
Police have appealed for anyone with any information about the arson attack to contact police on 0845 6060606.
