Aldi plans change for ‘new’ Milnsbridge store

A decision on the planning application has been delegated to council officers.
The former Somerfield store at Milnsbridge was bought by Aldi ealier this year – making it Aldi’s third store in Huddersfield following the opening of outlets at Waterloo and Beck Lane Industrial Estate, off St John’s Road.
The Scar Lane store was closed last month and is expected to reopen in November.
The 36 staff employed by Somerfield were made redundant with the sell-off. Aldi has made no comment on how it plans to recruit staff for the store.
Somerfield said it would do everything possible to support staff to find alternative jobs with Somerfield or other local employers.
Somerfield stressed the sale was taken on commercial grounds and was not related to the Co-op’s £1.5bn takeover of the Somerfield business and subsequent ruling by the Office of Fair Trading that it must sell some of its stores.
