Community Awards: Emergency services

Former colleague Alan Parkinson said: "It has been said on numerous occasions by staff at Huddersfield that when Roy retired in March there was a huge gap left which will be so hard for anyone else to fill."

Roy dealt with countless incidents of trauma, major injury, heart attacks, strokes, diabetic comas and epileptic seizures.

Among his more notable missions was the daring rescue of a microlight aircraft pilot who had crashed into a cliff and had become stranded on a narrow ledge.

Roy was rightly given an award for bravery for his courage and calmness throughout the incident.

On another occasion he was lowered into a narrow, deep shaft to treat a man who had been badly injured by falling equipment.

Roy went on to become a station officer at Huddersfield where he was well-loved by fellow members of staff.

He was a role model for young colleagues and always willing to pass on the benefits of his wealth of experience.

MOHAMMED RAUF

INSPECTOR Mohammed Rauf relishes his work at the sharp end of policing in Huddersfield.

Since he became inspector of the Huddersfield North Neighbourhood Policing Team in August last year he has made it his mission to bring the diverse communities on his patch closer together.

Within West Yorkshire Police he has created a Diversity Network of officers to draw on their individual skills and cultural or ethnic backgrounds.

At a time when there is significant emphasis on reaching out to sections of the community that may have felt alienated in the past, he has also visited various religious centres throughout his area to encourage positive relationships between the police and the public.

This has become the starting point for a planned multi-faith event in Kirklees.

Outside of the area for which he is directly responsible, Insp Rauf has also helped to develop a dialogue group in Ravensthorpe for people to discuss cultural and community issues with the police.

He often works long hours and keeps his mobile phone on even when off-duty so that he can be contacted out of hours.

He was nominated for going that extra mile when it comes to providing the best service he can to the public.
