Huddersfield students win rent battle
STUDENTS took their greedy landlord to court – and won.
The eight University of Huddersfield students were unwilling to sit back and let their former landlord take their money.
In 2007, each student had paid him £200 as a deposit to rent their Highfields house.
But when they moved out last year the landlord wouldn’t return the £1,600 – and he even asked for more.
The angry students refused to accept the deal, took up their case through the Small Claims Court in Huddersfield County Court and won.
Richard Picot, 21, was in his second year at the time and was renting a room in the house.
He said the landlord was asking for up to £2,000 for repairs and cleaning.
Richard, a music production student, said: "He claimed the damage caused was more than the initial deposit.
"It was for damage and general cleaning but a lot of damage was present when we moved in.
"He claimed for broken beds, stained mattresses and carpets and things like that.
"But lots of the things were broken or damaged when we moved in and had ‘bodged’ repairs.
"It came as a surprise. There was a lot of charges for cleaning and re-grouting when a lot of that was just general wear-and-tear."
