Carr Green pupils make Rastrick drivers think about their speed

Christine Beal said: “I am delighted these signs have now been put in place.
“Over the last couple of years concerns over the traffic speeds on this road have been raised repeatedly in meetings of the Action Group, through our residents’ survey and at police forums.
“It has also been raised on a number of occasions by Carr Green School, so much so that the school children went out with the police to take speed readings to provide evidence to support the need for road safety measures.
“It’s great for the school children to be able to see that with a good cause, some positive action, constructive communication and working together with those in authority, we can all step up and make a real difference in our communities.”
Clr Craig Whittaker added: “I became involved in the campaign in January 2008 after two more pedestrians had been injured.
“I think it is fantastic that the hard work of Christine and the Action Group, with the support from the school children, has finally paid off.
“Given the number of injuries recorded over recent years, these signs are essential to protect not only local residents but also the children who attended Carr Green School.”
The VAS operate by monitoring the speed of oncoming vehicles and when they exceed the speed limit the signs display a warning.
A trial in Calderdale with 14 of the signs proved successful and an additional eight sites are planned.
