Three injured in Batley flats blaze

A YOUNG mother and her two-year-son had to be rescued when a fire started in a block of flats in Batley.

The 23-year-old woman and her son were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation. The blaze in Chinewood Avenue badly damaged a ground floor flat shortly after 11pm on Monday.

The pair were in a flat on the middle floor of the six-flat complex.

A policeman was also treated for the effects of smoke inhalation after trying to rescue the woman and her son.

All three were treated at Dewsbury District General Hospital.

Police and fire investigators at the scene believed the fire had been started deliberately.

Fire crews from Batley, Dewsbury and Morley attended the blaze which started in a cupboard in the hallway of the flat.
