Huddersfield schools celebrate scooping top teaching awards

THEY’RE the toast of the classrooms.

Five local teachers and a governor have won top awards at the annual 2009 Northern Teaching Awards.

Jane Acklam, of Moor End Technology College, Crosland Moor, was the top winner, walking away with the award for headteacher of the year in a secondary school.

She was also named the winner of the General Teaching Council excellence in professional development category.

Mrs Acklam has been the headteacher at Moor End since 2003 and said: “It is amazing not only for me but for the whole school.

“I think the greatest achievement is always the exam results because they are our children’s future.

“Moor End is an amazing area and the pupils, the staff and whole team are a great bunch of people, I get so much support off them and they share my vision for the school too.

“All of us (from Huddersfield) winning these awards shows that education in the area is of a high standard and that we recognise our part in shaping the futures of all of our children.”

Her Moor End colleague Jacqueline Good won the award for teaching assistant of the year.

She was unanimously selected as the winner for her work with pupils who need a little extra help, while her success at tackling bullying is considered one of her biggest contributions.

Mrs Good said: “I am over the moon, it’s been a brilliant day and I am very proud.

“Moor End is a fantastic school, we’ve got a brilliant head, brilliant pupils and staff and we all work together to get the best for everyone.

“The children nominated me which means a lot because they must see something in me which they can relate to.

“I love my job, I love getting up everyday and going into work.”

Peter Brown, of Salendine Nook High School, walked away with the award for teacher of the year in a secondary school.
