Cyclists’ testing coast-to-coast ride for Ruddi

THE dad of baby boy battling a rare cancer will cycle across the country to raise cash for charity.

Craig Waterworth, 28, will be joined by seven colleagues from Calderdale College riding from Scarborough to Blackpool next month.

Craig’s son, 10-month-old Ruddi, has rhabdomysarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer.

He is the youngest person ever to have a cancerous growth of this type on his prostate gland in the UK.

The cyclists are raising money for Candlelighters children’s cancer charity, the Sick Children’s Trust and ward 10 at St James’s Hospital in Leeds, where Ruddi has been treated.

Sport development officer Craig, of Lowergate, Paddock, said: “These are absolutely amazing charities that have given us a lot of support. We wanted to give something back.

“We’re all in training. It’s a long way to go, but we’re looking forward to it.”

Ruddi is undergoing chemotherapy for his cancer. His family is awaiting the results of a scan to find out if it is working.

The 220km bike ride will take place on July 18 and 19. To sponsor the cyclists, visit the Calderdale College website, www.calderdale.ac.uk
