Diamond wedding celebration for Oakes couple
AN OAKES couple celebrated their diamond wedding with a party for 100 people.
Joan Morris, nee Fuller, married Sydney Morris at Marsden Congregational Church on June 18 1949.
They had met two years earlier at a dance at Marsden Mechanics Hall.
After exchanging vows they held a reception at the village’s British Legion and enjoyed a honeymoon to Southport.
Mr Morris said it rained every day for six weeks after they married.
The couple have two children, Clive and Carol, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr Morris, 82, worked in Stocksbridge, Sheffield then as a draughtsman and later technical director for a Slaithwaite engineers before he retired after 60 years.
His wife, 81, worked in a shop in Marsden before having children.
The couple celebrated their diamond anniversary with a celebration for up to 100 people at their Oakes home.
Asked what a secret to a happy marriage is, Mr Morris replied: “I would always say being tolerant of each other.
“And saying yes when she asks me to do something,” he joked.
