Shelley College pupils join space race

YOUNG designers hope to win a trip to see a space shuttle.

Pupils from Shelley College have made it to the final of the Virgin Mission Galactic competition.

The challenge is open to children aged 11 to 14 who can produce a space-themed product. The winners will travel to Mojave Spaceport in the US and see a shuttle take-off.

Shelley College pupils Leonard Kenny, Jordan Kennett, David Rogers and Robyn Whiting have designed a executive desk lamp and can also be used to store stationery.

They visited RAF Linton-On-Ouse last month to compete in the regional heat. The panel of three judges sent their entry through to the final on July 16.

Assistant head teacher Debbie Lumb praised the pupil’s efforts. She said: “I am very proud of our Year 9 students, they have worked essentially independently since January on this project.”
