Examiner Community Awards: Sports Personality, Sports Team of the Year, Teacher of the Year
NO-ONE better ever is how Keith Hilton was described by his nominee for the Teacher Of The Year category.
Keith, assistant headteacher at Almondbury High School and Specialist Language College, is celebrating his 30th year at the school this year and 35 years teaching at school’s in Kirklees.
"It was fantastic to be nominated. Over the past 35 years I have taught thousands of students across Kirklees and many have been in touch after seeing my nomination in the paper.
"This means such a lot to me, it’s fantastic and also fabulous for Almondbury High School and Language College which has wonderful students, staff and parents."
Keith’s optimism and infectious energy is undiminished and his dedication, flexibility and adaptability never-ending.
In 1980 the school had only 450 students and was on the verge of closure.
Almost 30 years later it is a successful, thriving educational establishment serving a disadvantaged community by supporting, challenging pupils and motivating its learners.
Keith has grown professionally with the school, studying for an MA in history, taking Italian lessons and even taking a seven-week intensive training course in hairdressing!
He has worked tirelessly to fund-raise for the school and forged links with the local college to provide an adult education programme in school.
He is seen as a role model by the whole community and he is the public face of Almondbury High School.
His nominator said: "This would be a fitting tribute to all that work, to a man who has gently nurtured, supported and inspired generation upon generation of young people.
Other nominees in this category, sponsored by Stafflex, were Abi Williams and
Jackie Good.
