Shelley schoolboy refused bus pass – because he moved house

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Nicholas Parmenter has been refused a free bus pass – because he moved house but not school.

The dilemma began when Nicholas moved to Cleveland Way, Shelley, from Skelmanthorpe in May.

He and his mum Julie Gibbon decided he would continue to go to his current school, Scissett Middle School, as he has only six weeks left there and has made good friends.

Because the family have moved to Shelley, they now live more than four miles away from the Wakefield Road school, so Mrs Gibbon applied for a free bus pass from Kirklees Council.

Mrs Gibbon understood that children are eligible for the free pass if their journey to school is more than three miles.

But she was told they couldn’t have the bus pass because Nicholas could have moved to Kirkburton Middle School, which is nearer to Shelley.

If he moved to a new school for six weeks he would be eligible under Kirklees Council rules for free journeys to lessons.

Mrs Gibbon, 42, told the Examiner the family are being ‘punished’ for moving.

The 42-year-old said: “I personally think it’s ridiculous to expect him in his last year to actually move schools.

“He only has six weeks term time left at his current school.

“He’s obviously not going to move now.

“His friends are there and they’re important to him especially at his age.

“Nick was quite upset because I think he thought he would have to change school.
