Huddersfield ‘neighbours from Hell’ facing eviction
Jun 25 2009 by Sam Casey, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
TWO houses providing homes to alleged nightmare neighbours could be shut down this week.
West Yorkshire Police and Kirklees Council have taken pioneering action against properties on Church Lane and Church Street in Moldgreen following a host of complaints from people living nearby.
Officers yesterday visited the houses to tell occupants they were seeking a court order to evict them and board their houses up.
It is claimed large groups congregating at the properties have held wild parties, hurled four-letter abuse and racist insults at passers-by and have been seen fighting in the street.
On one occasion, it is alleged, someone was hit over the head with a bottle.
Sgt Julie Astbury, from the police anti-social behaviour unit, said: “Basically, residents are at the end of their tethers. They have had enough.”
In a first for Huddersfield, police are using new powers under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act to seek closure orders.
Huddersfield magistrates will tomorrow hear evidence against the occupants before deciding whether to grant the request.
