Primrose Hill Treat revived at Stile Common Infant and Nursery School
PUPILS past and present of a Huddersfield school are in celebratory mood.
Preparations are well underway for the revival of the Primrose Hill Treat next month, and children, parents, grandparents and staff at Stile Common Infant and Nursery School in Plane Street are determined to make it a resounding success.
The Treat on Saturday July 11 is being recreated as the school prepares to merge with the junior school in September, and move into its new multi million pound building – Hillside Primary School in November.
Headteacher Dawn Horton and learning mentor Gill Mellor have been instrumental in the organisation of the Treat which will include a free tea and commemorative mug for pupils.
Plane Street will be closed off and there will be brass and jazz bands, street dancing, a ceilidh, bouncy castle, barbecue, fire engine, police, and raffles.
A new book , Do You Remember? Memories of Stile Common School, will also go on sale that day which includes memories of former pupils, old reports and photographs.
The school opened in 1876 as Stile Common Board School. It was designed by architect Charles Fowler at a cost of £7,227 15s 6d and was built to accommodate around 800 pupils aged five to 13 years.
Parents had to pay between 1d and 3d for their children to attend and a trust was set up to ensure even the poorest children in the parish were educated.
