Petition against sculptures in Slaithwaite woodland

The ‘sound mirrors’ by artist Matthew Sansom were designed to take walkers on a sound-led journey through the picnic site, giving them an acoustic exploration of the environment.

They were commissioned jointly by the River Colne Sculpture Trail and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival as part of an initiative to create a dynamic and varied sculpture trail in the Colne Valley.

Mrs Coupland said the group was not against modern art or public sculptures.

“It just isn’t the place for them,’’ she added;

Mrs Coupland suggested that a suitable sculpture could have been made at a local business such as Steel Dreams, on Upper Mills.

The local company design and manufacture unique sculptures from stainless steel.

Mrs Coupland said: “They do the most fabulous sculptures.

“I have no link to them whatsoever, but I think because they are local to us the sculptures could have been made and produced there.

“They know the area and are familiar with it.”
