A MAN was saved from drowning in Mirfield after falling into the water.

Fire crews and police were called to the River Calder at Newgate at 5.30am yesterday. The man – thought to be drunk – had fallen into the water. He managed to clutch the side of the riverbank and waited for the emergency services to arrive. Firefighters used ladders and ropes to lower themselves down the steep banking to reach the man. They then helped lift him out of the water to safety. He was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital by ambulance, but was not seriously injured.
