Kirklees College’s new Waterfront campus back on track

The campus would be the centrepiece of a wider £175m redevelopment, known as Waterfront Quarter, which would include three blocks of flats and four offices buildings and would create 2,000 jobs.

Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman welcomed the news that the Waterfront Quarter had won through to the next stage.

He said: “I’m delighted about this. We’ve campaigned hard because the development is critical.

“We won’t just get an amazing college, we’ll get an amazing regeneration. It’s the one major redevelopment in Huddersfield which is likely to go ahead quickly.”

The 13 lucky colleges to win through to the next stage yesterday were: Kirklees, Barnsley, Bournville, Furness, Hartlepool, Leyton, Manchester Wythenshawe, North West Kent, St Helens, Sandwell, South Thames, Tresham Institute of Further and Higher Education and Corby West Cheshire College.

More than 160 other colleges which also applied for priority funding have been told they will have to wait at least two years.
