HUDDERSFIELD Civic Society is set to try and start a debate on the town centre’s future.
The society is taking over the old Neaversons’ shop, on Byram Street, from today to show details of all the big developments proposed for Huddersfield town centre.
The exhibition, which will run until July 4, will show designs for developments including the Queensgate revival project, the Kingsgate expansion, as well as proposals for new Tesco and Asda stores.
The Asda store is planned for Queen Street South and the Tesco scheme would include knocking down the sports centre on Southgate, replacing it with a supermarket and relocating the sports facility to Springwood.
The £175m proposal for the Waterfront quarter at Folly Hall – including a new campus for Kirklees College – will also be on show.
Alongside all this information will be films, DVDs, pictures and memorabilia of Huddersfield from past and present.
The aim is to stimulate debate about how Huddersfield should look in future.
There will be two debates – one for society members at Kirklees College this evening from 7.30pm and one open to the public at Huddersfield University’s Castle Hill Suite on Thursday, at 7.30pm.
