But Heather said she enjoyed the event. She said: “The supportive atmosphere and the camaraderie are absolutely brilliant.”

Debbie Abrahams, Labour’s Colne Valley Parliamentary candidate, led a team of 20 women at the event.

She said: “Many of us have family and friends who have been affected by cancer. We took part to raise money to help rid us of this dreadful disease.

“Over the last few years we have seen real developments in cancer treatments and care and we want to build on this. The extra funds we raise will help further research.

“It was great so many Colne Valley women took part. Our team included women of all ages and fitness levels and we have been encouraging each other as we have been preparing for the event.

“As well as raising money for such a good cause, we had a lot of fun along the way.”

Nicola Ward, 36, from Bolton, came to the race with four friends from Lancashire. She finished the course in 28mins and 43secs.

Nicola said: “It was difficult because the race was on grass and we’re used to training on tarmac but I’m ecstatic with my time – I thought I would do it in 45 minutes.”

Nicola was running for her father. She said: “My dad’s fighting bowel cancer at the moment. All my best mates are with me today. This is an amazing event.”

Race for Life was held at Leeds Road Playing Fields this year because restoration work is planned at Greenhead Park, which usually hosts the event.

First Bus laid on transport for the competitors from the Galpharm car park to the playing fields.

The Examiner had a stall at the event, giving out goody bags and balloons. Senior marketing executive Natasha Maskery said: “The balloons went down really well with the kids. We’re really happy to support this excellent event.”

Race for Life began in 1994 and is the largest women-only fundraising event in the UK. For more information visit www.raceforlife.org1
