Huddersfield pair rescued from blaze-hit hotel

“It was very frightening. We could see all the black smoke and we did not know if it was going to blow the door open.”

She said the fire affected the ground and lower floors of the hotel and she and Beth had to wait on the balcony while firefighters rescued them by using a hydraulic platform.

Ms Walsh said the fire broke out at around 11.30pm on Monday as they were going to bed.

They were found alternative accommodation on Monday night, but Ms Walsh said they had been allowed back to their room to collect their belongings and she believed they would be able to continue their stay in a part of the hotel not affected by the blaze.

“We are all okay, but we were a bit traumatised,” she added.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said the injured were taken to hospital, but no-one was thought to have been seriously hurt.

She said: “We have received reports that seven British nationals were injured as a result of a fire at a hotel in Marmaris, Turkey.

“We understand that those involved were taken to hospital for treatment and some have been discharged.

“We do not yet know the extent of the injuries of those remaining in hospital, though we have been advised that no-one is in a serious condition.

“Consular staff from the British Consulate in Marmaris have travelled to the hotel to meet with the British nationals involved to provide consular assistance.”

An investigation has been launched into the fire.

A notice placed on the hotel’s website before the Examiner revealed Ms Walsh’s story claimed: “Reports on Club Anastasia in UK press are greatly exaggerated. The management emphasise that the small fire broke out in sauna and was put down within a short time.”

The management claim Club Anastasia continues to operate as before.
