Primary school children ‘Sing Up’ for Kirklees
The afternoon session was opened by a fantastic drum display by ‘Psycho Taiko’.
Musicians from Linthwaite Clough Junior Infant and Early Years School played while Matt Delaney from Kirklees music school conducted.
Alison Watkins, director of music at Lindley Junior School, took to the stage to co-ordinate the huge choir.
Barbara Lawson, school improvement officer for music at Kirklees Council, said: “It’s fantastic. We’ve got thousands of children here and teachers from all over Kirklees.
“This is definitely the icing on the cake.”
Sing Up is a national singing programme to encourage singing in primary schools.
The initiative is championed by the composer and broadcaster Howard Goodall.
It is supported by a £40m Government investment. Schools are encouraged to get their pupils singing every day.
Amelia Kasmi, from Sing Up Yorkshire, said: “Our aim is to provide the children of Kirklees and the adults who work with them with an inspirational opportunity to sing in Huddersfield Town Hall.
“Taking part in the singing showcase will be something that they will remember with pleasure and pride – musical memories are forever.”
