Stephen Whiteley said: “The first I knew was when I got a call from adult services when I was on holiday in Greece.
“They asked for a meeting with me and my parents when I got back saying unfortunately the service was being closed.
“Their subsidy of the meals cannot be that much, but if they go with this other option it will end up costing you and me much more through our tax.
“They’ve run the service into the ground.”
Two more of the users confirmed the first they knew of it was when they were told it was closing.
Kirklees Council says users have been offered an alternative of paying for someone to cook food in their home – but they would have to buy the food themselves.
The council says its research has found people would rather have the service, which costs them £9.25 per hour, than pay £1.95 per day for a meal delivered to their homes.
The council spokesman said the service, run by volunteers, is not commercially viable, adding that their subsidy varies depending on a person’s individual needs and financial circumstances.
