Bradford Crown Court heard that Mohammed Farooq suffered from a heart condition and his son Kayshan had earlier acted as a peacemaker during a confrontation between his father and the Khan brothers.
After hearing that another fight had started, Farooq turned up with the knife and chased after the injured Yusuf Khan stabbing him in the buttock.
Judge Gullick said fortunately Yusuf Khan had been able to get away from his pursuers.
He told Farooq that he wanted to make it clear to him and others that the use of knives to settle arguments was not acceptable.
Barrister Peter Birkett QC, for Farooq, said his client was normally a calm and placid man and he faced being separated from his wife and two children for a significant period of time.
