Queensgate Market: Fears over future
Jul 4 2009 Huddersfield Daily Examiner
“The proposed regeneration of the market is only having an effect in terms of traders who may not be willing to invest substantial amounts in a unit when they don’t know how long they will be there.
“Added to that markets all over the country are finding it difficult because of a lack of investment and over the years it is catching up with them because the shopping public demands a quality environment.
“It is a shame because Huddersfield will become like any other town in any place with chain stores rather than the individual shops we once had.
“With independent businesses gone the town will lose its distinctive quality.”
Mr Pearson believes the introduction of a Tesco superstore on the ring road will have a devastating effect on the whole of the town, mainly because of the traffic issues it will create.
But he hopes there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel for the market traders and says his wish is for the market hall to be refurbished.
A spokeswoman for Kirklees Council said: “The rents at Queensgate Market are currently being negotiated with the traders association.
“There are a number of stalls currently empty and the council is actively working to identify traders who would complement the current variety in the market rather than duplicating stalls and increasing competition with traders already there during the current difficult climate.
“The Queensgate Market Traders’ Association is involved in the letting process for new stallholders. Other uses are being found for some of the stalls and the Examiner itself will be occupying one during September for its Bonny Baby competition.”
