Bid to tempt more teens to Huddersfield University

Current and former students from the department acted as mentors across the week to provide insights into university life.

Ms Macbeth said the students had the potential to go into careers in fashion, film, animation and architecture and hoped they had “got lots of vision for their future careers”.

One of the pupils, Carla Taylor, from Bridlington, said: “It has helped me decide to come to university, I definitely want to go now.”

Another, Bekah Francis, said the week had given her an insight into university life.

During the week the students took part in classes in textiles and fashion, photography, interior design, animation, 3D design, digital media and contemporary art, as well as receiving careers advice.

Student Jadene Codner said: “It was good to try a variety of subjects and meet new people.”

Steve Challenger, executive director of West Yorkshire Lifelong Learning Network, was at the presentation in the university’s new Creative Arts Building to give each pupil a certificate and award prizes for merit.

Former footballer Andy Booth also made a speech as a Huddersfield Town ambassador at the end-of-week presentation.
