THEY came in their hundreds – and went away thoroughly entertained.
Huddersfield’s music-loving public are huge supporters of the YMCA’s annual Concert on the Hill.
Typically, the British weather had changed from the balmy evenings of earlier in the week, but the threat of occasional rain – there was just a brief shower at the start – failed to dampen the spirits of the 1,500 or so who made what is by now almost an annual pilgrimage to YMCA’s rugby union headquarters at Salendine Nook.
Now in its 10th year, the winning format remains the same, with the excellent Lindley Band partnered by Colne Valley and Honley Male Voice choirs and featuring, for the third successive year, the stunning Marsh soprano Julia Garbutt, all marshalled once again by the indefatigable MC David Roebuck.
The one new addition to this year’s line-up was the inclusion of special guests, the multi-award-winning Lindley Junior School Choir with their conductor Alison Watkins.
Their splendid contribution in the first half of Saturday’s night’s spectacular was a five song set which was richly appreciated by the big gathering. It amply demonstrated just why this young group of singers have become one of the most lauded junior choirs in the country.
