Holmfirth Duck race goes swimmingly

THE 26th annual Holmfirth Duck Race went swimmingly after a couple of washout years spoiled by downpours.

Hundreds of people flocked to the banks of the River Holme to watch thousands of plastic ducks float from The Bridge to the Sands Recreation Ground yesterday.

The charity event, organised by Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table, raises about £10,000 each year for good causes in Kirklees.

The Duck Race, which takes place on the first Sunday of every July, was invented by Pendragon 41 Club member Jeff Woodward.

Cash prizes, this year from Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors, Premier Partnership and Virtual Huddersfield, were awarded to the owner of the ducks which made the half-mile trip to the net at Sands Rec first.

Mostly good weather ensured an impressive turnout and while water levels in the Holme were low, assistants walked in the river to free any trapped ducks.

Huddersfield Giants Andy Raleigh and Danny Kirmond were on hand at The Bridge to launch the ducks.
